Layering weather is upon us and I am trying to get creative with my style. I am so used to throwing on jeans, but lately I have pushed myself to find another alternative. Sweaters are also my go-to, so why not putting one on over a dress? Viola! This is a perfect combo for balancing proportions -slightly oversized on top & fitted on the bottom. Pair it with simple, chic accessories and you’re good to go!

Now that fall is here, I am find myself reaching for the same staple items over & over again. A sort of uniform, if you will. This usually consists of layering pieces in natural colors/prints so I can mix & match with endless possibilities. Even though I switch it up with different cuts and fabrics, I tend to have a few essentials that I lean on heavily for a clean & easy look.

1 . Stylish Coat – Every girl needs that amazing coat that tops off any layered look. I love black, grey or camel coats as they go with any color combo and gives your outfit a sleek sense of sophistication.

2 . Cozy Sweater – Sweaters are like candy for me & I need one of every style in every colors. As an essential piece for fall, sweaters are versatile and can easily be dressed up or down. Whether it’s a chunky cable knit or thin cashmere, layer it up and look ready for a chilly day. Don’t forget the spiced pumpkin latte 🙂

3 . A great pair of flats – Everyone usually stocks up on boots for fall, but I like having a go-to pair of flats to mix it up. They are so easy to slip on and can give you a chic, sophisticated touch.

4 . Comfy jeans – Jeans are a staple in a great fall wardrobe as they can be worn with just about anything. I still love my skinnies so I can pair them with over sized sweaters and jackets to even out my proportions. Boyfriend, boot cut, distressed, high waisted..whatever you feel comfortable in, wear them with confidence!

5 . Accessories – Sunglasses, a simple watch and studs are a few of my favorite accessories. These can add an extra pop to an outfit and personalize your look. Round up your favorites and wear them on repeat.

Tips for Looking Effortless

Whenever I think of “effortless” style, it conjures up images of cool, confident girls walking down the street. They know they look great and have a sense of not being overly polished or done up. Like a messy bun and a red lip or a sleek pony with a clean, fresh face. I am loving this concept more and more as I get older. I don’t always have the time to dedicate to perfect hair, makeup or picking out the perfect outfit. So I have been loving throwing staple pieces together that I know fit and make me feel like a million bucks. Thus, seeming easy and effortless.

Below some of my tips to help cultivate an “effortless” look:

1 . Be comfortable. You always should feel comfortable in what you put on. It gives you the freedom to go about your day with a good, relaxed feeling and if you feel good in what you’ve got on, it will show. Having a “go-to” pieces in your closet helps that you know fit well and help melt away insecurities.

2 . Wear something that makes you feel confident. Do you ever have that one outfit that when you put it on, you feel like you can conquer the world? Why not have that same confidence every time you get dressed?! I am working on that and lately, when I wear non-fussy, minimal clothes, I feel great. So no matter what your signature style is, make sure you rock it! Trust me, people will notice 🙂

3. Don’t over polish. Messy buns and a bit of lipstick have been my go-to’s lately, which adds a bit of an undone edginess. Seeming like you just throw on sunnies & an oversized sweater without spending hours in front of a mirror adds a bit of interest and ease to your overall look.

3 Reasons You Need More Suede

Do you ever get the funny feeling that something has picked you? Like when you aren’t looking for anything specific when an item catches your eye as if it was saying “pick me”? This happens to me all the time.

For example, we visited Bark, a shelter in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to adopt two cats (in order to keep each other company). An orange tabby came right up and decided to say hello. We immediately fell in love with him & it just so happened he had a brother who was a very shy tuxedo cat. They had been there 6 long months as the volunteers refused to separate them & only crazy people come in looking for two at a time 😉 (insert crazy cat lady joke here). So fast forward 5 years, including a long road trip from New York to Kansas, two moves and a baby & these two are still our best little buddies.

That being said, I was lazily flipping through the crammed sale rack at Express when this amazing piece of suede jumped out & said “pick me!”. The color was gorgeous and I couldn’t resist the soft material. It fit like a glove and I am greatly lacking in the skirt game. I love the simple metal detail and fit in as a classic piece that could transcend seasons. This got me thinking why I need to add more of suede to my wardrobe & wanted to share 3 reasons you need more suede too!

1. Suede is soft & versatile. I can’t resist any fabric that has a buttery texture and suede has a great heaviness to it as well. It is cool to the touch, but keeps you warm on a chilly day. It is similar to leather, in the fact that you can rock it all year round.

2. It is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe.  Suede comes in many different pieces, such as jackets, boots, skirts, dresses & bags. They also often come in jewel tones for the fall and a softer, pastel palette for the spring. Each has the power to take any look to the next level.

3. Adds an element of texture. If you want to create a effortless & subtle look, adding texture can be the answer to building a chic style without piling on too much. I have kept this black and camel combo simple, but the suede helps bring in dimension and interest to the relatively minimal outfit.

Fall calls for pumpkin spice lattes and fun trips to the pumpkin patch. My little bear and I went twice in 2 days and the first go around, it was a surprise chilly day. We were vastly under dressed because my front porch wasn’t a good judge of gusts of freezing wind. It made me realize how mentally unprepared I am for the cold (and winter in general)! I couldn’t hack it and needless to say I was ready to jump into Lily’s stroller and share the blanket with her.

Light layers are perfect for the season as it cools down and I love this blazer over a simple tee. I just got my first pair of Paige denim and they are amazing! Since I live in denim, these will last me forever and so comfy while having a cropped cut that fits my short legs perfectly. They are worth the investment and even got them on sale at Nordstrom.

Hello, my name is Kelli and I have an addiction to grey. Grey clothing, grey walls, grey bedding, grey baby clothes…you name it, I will buy it in grey. It is such a subtle, sophisticated color that I love to incorporate into my personal style and home decor. This season, I am obsessed with grey sweaters and you may see several make an appearance on my blog in the upcoming months.

That being said, I love finding high end pieces and then stumbling upon a similar item at stores like Forever 21. I had seen a cozy Alpaca Current/Elliott open cardigan for over $350 online and was drawn to minimal style.  Fast forward to a Sunday afternoon during “mommy me time” (aka taking an unnecessarily amount of time to ran a simple errand because you’re kid free) at the mall. I ran across this sweater cardigan here (similar here) for under $30! It has a luxe, comfy look without the hefty price tag. And most importantly, it’s grey 🙂

Oversized blouses have been my jam lately and I am loving this one from Zara lately. Pairing it with skinny jeans helps balance out the proportions and I am excited to rock these with large sweaters this fall.

I am trying to push myself outside of my comfort zone and bought some culottes for the first time. Even though I love my skinny jeans, I like trying out different proportions and am really liking the flowiness of the bottoms while keeping it simple & sleek on top.

I encourage you to try something new because you might surprise yourself! Speaking of new things, we signed up for Green Chef (similar to Blue Apron) and just tried our first meal tonight. It was fun to cook dishes that we wouldn’t normally think about cooking and everything comes measured out for you! It’s a good chance for my husband and I to spend time together and takes out a step of going to the store with a long ingredient list.

I love finding inspiration through IG and Pinterest. Most of my style boards are of clean and minimal looks because they make me feel calm. So I have been on a mission lately to incorporate that into my everyday style. When life gets chaotic, being able to channel good vibes through how you dress is important and putting on a sleek, simple outfit makes me feel like I am in control. Odd I know, but my house and style is a reflection of me and when I declutter and go back to basics, somehow I feel better.

Fall lends itself to a muted color palette and I am currently obsessed with neutrals. To keep a minimal & sharp look, add layers while keeping each piece on the basic side. This way interest is added, but doesn’t over complicate your overall ensemble.
